Closing the Loop: Student and Instructor Reflection on Feedback

Jan 22, 2025 | Product Update

This update includes a new feature: Closing the Loop where students and instructors can reflect on, and respond to, feedback received to reinforce learning and allow for a final say. We found some faculty and instructors wanted to write a narrative response to a student about the feedback that student received, some want students to review and respond to their own feedback, and some faculty want to do both. This feature allows for either or both options to be enabled.

Enabling Close the Loop

Closing the loop is enabled when when sending or scheduling a peer feedback survey. To enable, click either or both toggles as pictured at the bottom survey options, as pictured below.

How Closing the Loop Responses are Collected

Students Closing the Loop: when this option is enabled, students can write a response to their feedback. Results must be released to students (so that they have something to respond to) before they can respond and they enter their response at the bottom of the released results page, as pictured below.

Instructors Closing the Loop: this option allows instructors to write a response to students about the feedback they have received. Some instructors like to do this as a way to coach the student through their feedback and to provide insights for improvement. Instructor responses are entered in each student's individual results page. The screen below is from the instructor's point of view, where they can enter a message responding on the student's feedback for them to see.

Indentifying When Closed Loop Responses are Received

The survey page displays which student reflections have been submitted and which students still need an instructor feedback response entered. In the screen below, the green outline on the student profile picture (second student in Team 2) indicates that student has submitted a response to their feedback report. The purple dots next to the individual results button indicate that a response from the instructor is still needed. Instructors can enter this feedback from each student's results page. These indicators will only display when close the loop is enabled for a survey.
