Feedback Loop Client Case: Washington State University Carson College of Business

Aug 27, 2024 | Blog, Client Case Study

Washington State University Carson College of Business adopted Feedback in fall 2023. They had previously used an online survey tool for classroom peer review which had grown cumbersome to manage as their Ethics, Teams and Innovation course grew. Feedback Loop’s ease-of-use allowed Carson to scale its use to nearly 1,000 students in the first year. This Feedback Loop client case details Carson’s successful implementation.

Carson’s Feedback Loop implementation is at the college level but we also work with schools at the institution, department and even individual course level. At a Glance

Washington State University Carson College of Business needed a more user-friendly solution for peer feedback than a standard survey tool offered, especially for reviewing results at scale and providing performance feedback back to students so they can learn from their peer reviews.

Feedback Loop Client: by the Numbers

In their first year using Feedback Loop (2023 – 2024 academic year), 960 unique students completed 2,409 peer review submissions across several courses including Nolan’s BA 211 Ethics, Teams and Innovation course, detailed in this case.

Challenges

Prior to switching to Feedback Loop, feedback was collected from each student team through an online survey tool that is not optimized for peer feedback surveys. Combing through results was extremely time consuming because I had to review each individual student response and determine whether additional follow-up was necessary after I had manually created a summary of concerns noted. This approach put me as the Lead Instructor in the middle of the feedback students were receiving, and did not allow every student to know how their team felt they were doing in comparison to how they felt they were doing. Sifting through the data, sharing the results, and all of the follow-up was manual and time consuming.

Solution

Feedback Loop, through its deep Canvas integration, provides instructors with a much easier peer feedback process that works efficiently, even at scale.

Carson leveraged Feedback Loop’s built-in student performance report feature to build more accountability among student teams without creating more work for instructors.

Global Instructor

Washington State University, Carson College of Business

Integrating Feedback Loop into B_A 211: Ethics, Teams, and Innovation has been a game changer! As an Instructor for the Carson College of Business through Washington State University (WSU) Global Campus, I typically have between 120 – 150 students enrolled in my class each semester. With “Teams” being one of the core areas of focus for the course, the Instructor Team breaks each class into approximately 25 – 30 small project teams.

Keeping a pulse on how things are going with each team has historically been challenging, but Feedback Loop has made the process so much easier for both students and the Instructor Team! I especially appreciate how easy the platform makes it for the Instructor Team to release anonymized results of the Team 360 Evaluations right to the students, removing us from the equation, while allowing students to reflect on how they assessed themselves versus how their peers assessed them.

Working with the team at Feedback Loop has been a real pleasure and I greatly appreciate all the work they are doing to strengthen and enhance the tool.

Outcomes and Student Reception

1

Significant Time Savings for Instructors

Using Feedback Loop has made it much easier to quickly assess how teams are doing and determine where additional follow-up and instructor intervention would help. The platform also allows me to release feedback to students immediately after the peer feedback survey closes, giving them more time to make adjustments in a fast-paced seven week course.

Improved Student Reflection

Every student can reflect on how they felt they were communicating and collaborating versus how their teammates felt they were communicating and collaborationg. This has been especially valuable in a course where students learn how to work in teams more effectively since it encourages them to leverage what they have learned to make adjustments in how they engage with their team.

Student Response

Students seem to really appreciate how easy it is to complete the Team 360 Evaluations and appreciate seeing how they scored themselves versus how their teammates scored them. Students also value that some responses are only shared with the instructor team, allowing them to provide more honest and direct feedback when there are challenges or concerns they need help addressing.
