Utah State University’s College of Engineering adopted Feedback Loop starting spring 2024 beginning with two courses in the MAE department (an introductory course and a third year course) for a total of 430 students. Using Feedback Loop saved this department several hours each semester of manual response data parsing when they previously used Canvas’ built-in survey tool. Implementing Feedback Loop made this process seamless, automatic and more user friendly for both faculty and student!

LMS: Canvas
Customer: Utah State University
Discipline: Engineering
Utah State’s MAE department includes two groupwork courses that use Feedback Loop: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering and a third year-level groupwork course. Using Feedback Loop empowered this faculty to provide students with immediate insights on their performance within their teams.
Feedback Loop is also available for Brightspace, Moodle and Blackboard.
Challenges
Prior to switching to Feedback Loop, Professor Humes feedback used Canvas LMS’ quiz feature to conduct peer reviews for his groupwork courses. Not only was this very time consuming, but the response time to manually give students a snapshot of feedback from their peers was often too late for them to make adjustments in their group contributions and sometimes contained errors from the compilation tasks.
Solution
Students have been able to receive real-time feedback from their peers and we have been able to talk about ways to adjust based on that feedback, all without every leaving Canvas. Providing and receiving feedback is a fundamental skill to develop early in a career since nearly all workplace projects are team-based and Feedback Loop has made implementing this easy and efficient.

Feedback Loop has shifted my time entirely from the processing of the results to the development of improvement methods that students may be able to implement to improve their teamwork contribution. Students also get instant anonymous feedback from the peers along with a comparison of how their ranked themselves relative to their peer rankings. Self-awareness is important for everyone, especially for careers like engineering where the outcome is critical.

Outcomes
1
Instant, Actionable Performance Insights for Students
With Feedback Loop, it has been much easier to provide students with reporting on their performance within their groups without any manual effort from faculty to parse and distribute this data. Feedback Loop also removes any chance for user-error when parsing this information.
Automatically Generated Student Performance Report for Immediate, Efficient Student Reflection

The Power of a Dedicated Peer Feedback Tool with the Seamlessness of LMS Integration
Using the LMS integration has allowed Utah State to seamlessly import student groups and issue students their peer feedback surveys (and results!) right inside Canvas for an entirely seamless user experience.
